It’s time for you to outsource in your business, and you’re on the hunt to find the “right” service provider. Whether you’re looking for a graphic or web designer, a social media manager, a copywriter (😉), or something else, it can be stressful AF not knowing how to decide on the best hire for you and your business. Because after all, your business is your baby, and you want to make sure she’s in the best possible hands.
But how do you vet someone when you’re not an expert in their industry?
Here are some things to consider and questions to ask so you can make the hire without the headache:
Consider what kind of client experience they provide. Do you feel like you know what you’d be getting when you sign on to work with them? Does their messaging paint a clear picture of what it’s like to be in their world?
In addition to sharing behind-the-scenes content of what it’s like to work with them, does the service provider share any insights into their methodology or their secret sauce? Do they have formal training in their field? What street cred do they have?
Does the service provider share their “Why”? Are they clear about what motivates them, or what keeps them going when the days get long and hard? Does their “Why” resonate with you? Do you trust their motivations and reasons for being in business?
If applicable, does the person you’re considering hiring share their knowledge through blogs, social media posts, or other types of content? Are they adding value to their community with helpful tips and unique perspectives? While not all service providers may choose to do this, value-add content is a great way to showcase one’s skills and demonstrate competencies.
Social proof is an excellent way to vet service providers. Is your service provider sharing positive feedback and testimonials from clients they’ve worked with in the past? What results have they been able to deliver for clients? These can be a great indication of the kinds of results they could help facilitate for you, should you choose to work with them!
This may not be applicable for every service provider, but in some cases, it makes sense to share some of the “how” behind the results they get for clients. Again, this could include highlighting a part of their process, sharing a valuable tip or teaching on a topic, or referencing a specific framework or methodology they use. Being able to articulate how and why something works is an effective way to showcase how they’re able to deliver outstanding results consistently.
When you have questions, hesitations, or objections when inquiring with a service provider, how do they respond? Are they able to confidently answer your questions, or are you left in the dark?
Lastly, it’s crucial (IMHO) to consider a person’s vibe and energy when choosing to work with them. So many client-service provider relationships are deeply personal, and when hiring someone I want to feel confident that we’ll get along and work well together. Some factors to consider are their/their brand’s values and mission statement. Do you align with what they stand for? Do you share similar values? How does it feel in your gut to think about working with them?
The next time you’re considering hiring a new service provider, I hope you’ll reference this list of questions to help guide your decision. And if you’re ever in the market for a copywriter or photographer, I know a gal. 😉
